A useful reference

I find this book be a generally useful reference as I read about German history and my dabbling with family genealogies. The Perfect binding is a limitation when the area you want to concentrate on is restricted because of the book’s construction. But all in all a good addition to my reference library. And Mastof is always on top of their game and a pleasure to deal with.

Determining what German Lander ancestral home is located today

A much-awaited reference tool to discover exactly where a city, village, or town is located in today's political boundaries when your research indicates something else. Such principalities often changed pending what prince needed money or what prince married into another House of noble families.

I used to use Baedekers Tour Guides from 125 years ago with their great maps. But these guides are becoming harder to find.

This book not only provides great colorful maps, but also historical timelines that explain the changing political bounties for all the German Holy Roman Empire .

Historical Atlas of Germany 2nd Edition

I‘m a visual learner. The Atlas is very helpful to me and I hope others to envision national and regional changes over long periods of time. It invites you to jump right in and explore. Thanks Jim Beidler!

Beautiful collection

In-store purchase: What a great combination of history, geography and art! I love that it unravels the mysteries of German places going all the way back to tribal territories and confidently takes the reader through to the modern day. It would be easy to lose entire afternoons delving through the many regions depicted or by simply following one place through time as the various boundaries and affiliations swirl around it. This is both a useful and fascinating reference that’s been needed for a long time! Well done!

Beautiful history book

This book shows the development of Germany and parts of Europe from the earliest time. The concentration is on Germany but there are maps of Austria-Hungary and Switzerland also.
My German ancestors were from a small crossroads village west of the Bodensee. Although I could not pinpoint their village I was able to see the area where it is from some of the surrounding towns shown on the later maps.. The Bodensee appears on several of the old maps so I can see how the area looked at those various times. I also located the large city near where my Swiss ancestors originated.
It's too bad that the margins are cut off from the originals of some of the older maps but that is not a problem from me.
It's very interesting to see how Germany developed over time. I strongly recommend this book.
