Christian Yoder: Amish Immigrant

Nancy (Yoder) Schaffer

  • 1850

A thought-provoking mix of history and genealogy, the author brings to life the story of her own family who arrived in America on Sept. 21, 1742. Told through the eyes of Christian Yoder (1722-1772) and his family, their story is interspersed with historical facts and color pictures as you travel with them across the ocean, arrive in Philadelphia, and move to Hamburg, PA. You will a be witness to not only their hardships, but also their joys. (111pp. full-color illus. index. Author, 2025.)

Life of Immigrants to 1740's Pennsylvania

Excellent book. Easy to read. Holds your attention. Tells of life at that time and is very realistic. I have a great-grandmother who was a Yoder so the people in the book are my very distant relatives. My background is in civil engineering and surveying so I am very happy to learn the process of obtaining land in Pennsylvania at that time. I am happy to see the map of the original land warrant for Christian Yoder. Beyond the scope of this book I would like to see a map of the adjoining land owners at the time. Beautiful color cover illustration of a ship which is like the one the Yoders came on. (Maybe it is their ship)
