The Writings of Ernest Waldo Bechtel, Vol. I: Selected Pieces of Poems and Prose

edited by C. Richard Beam and Jennifer L. Trout

  • 1800

Ernest Waldo Bechtel not only had the natural ability to write poetry in the Pennsylvania German dialect but also had the ability to make it rhyme. He did not choose to use English terms in his pieces, but instead chose to coin new words in the dialect. In this first volume, readers are presented with 67 poems, 25 prose pieces in Pennsylvania German, 20 prose pieces in English and 5 biographical writings. (269pp. color illus. Center for Pa. German Studies, 2009.)
