In 1777, Valley Forge was a small village of houses and buildings, a merchant gristmill, and a functioning colonial ironwork that was part of the Potts family’s iron production and distribution system. That September, it found itself in the path of the British Army’s advance on their way to capture Philadelphia. This is the story about three individuals—Isaac Potts (owner of the mill), William Dewees (owner of the forge), and Deborah Hewes (renter of Potts’ mill house that Washington would use for his headquarters when the American Army encamped there)—who lived there when the British passed through.
