Is That an Amish Name? A Look at Old Order and Conservative Anabaptist Surnames

Stephen Correll

  • 1400

Due to such a high retention rate of young people in Anabaptist circles, a sense of ethnic, as well as spiritual peoplehood has developed. The "Plain People" recognize certain names as labels of place and background in their culture. Having grown up around certain names, they subconsciously come to realize what the various names around them indicate about the people who bear them. They know what is meant by an "Amish name," "Hutterite name," and so forth. The names within their circles of interaction become familiar and gather connotations. Discusses Amish, Apostolic Christian, Brethren, Hutterite, Mennonite, and River Brethren names. Also includes a list of the names with their group and meaning. (202pp. illus. Masthof Press, 2021.)
