Historical Atlas of Germany 2nd Edition

I‘m a visual learner. The Atlas is very helpful to me and I hope others to envision national and regional changes over long periods of time. It invites you to jump right in and explore. Thanks Jim Beidler!

Beautiful collection

In-store purchase: What a great combination of history, geography and art! I love that it unravels the mysteries of German places going all the way back to tribal territories and confidently takes the reader through to the modern day. It would be easy to lose entire afternoons delving through the many regions depicted or by simply following one place through time as the various boundaries and affiliations swirl around it. This is both a useful and fascinating reference that’s been needed for a long time! Well done!

Beautiful history book

This book shows the development of Germany and parts of Europe from the earliest time. The concentration is on Germany but there are maps of Austria-Hungary and Switzerland also.
My German ancestors were from a small crossroads village west of the Bodensee. Although I could not pinpoint their village I was able to see the area where it is from some of the surrounding towns shown on the later maps.. The Bodensee appears on several of the old maps so I can see how the area looked at those various times. I also located the large city near where my Swiss ancestors originated.
It's too bad that the margins are cut off from the originals of some of the older maps but that is not a problem from me.
It's very interesting to see how Germany developed over time. I strongly recommend this book.

Worth it even if you have the previous edition!

I have an older edition of this atlas, so I wondered whether it was worth it to upgrade to the 2nd edition. I'm so glad I did! The new maps are great, and having a full index online is a game-changer. This is a must-have resource for anyone who works with German genealogical research.

Doesn't have my family towns

To me it seems to be a waste of money as none of the towns my family came from are in this atlas.
