Homer Anthony: The Diary of a Navy Sailor

Dennis Damiani

  • 1200

Homer Anthony was a well-read, intelligent 19-year-old young man from Reading, Pa., who was serving his country in 1943 on the USS Tang. He was a masterful writer and his honesty and humor show in his diary entries. His patriotism is evident and his ability to observe and write down his thoughts will stun you. Homer wrote in his diary daily—sometimes mundane everyday things and other times he wrote what was happening in the world. The diary is transcribed exactly how Homer wrote it, but the author has taken the time to write excerpts to further explain some of the entries when needed. (103pp. color illus. Author, 2025.)

Liked the book

Anthony's diary entries were obviously the meat of the book. Damiani's added comments seemed repetitive and superfluous, but did not dim my appreciation of Anthony's work.
