Lancaster County Privy Bags

Clarke Hess

  • 1295

This beautifully designed catalog was produced for the "Lancaster County Privy Bags" exhibit at the Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley, Ephrata, Pa., from November 21, 2009, through May 15, 2010. The catalog features at least one captioned color photo of each of the charming and vibrant pieced and/or appliqued bags on exhibit. The introduction provides background on the history and use of the bags, which were designed to hold the scrap paper earmarked for privy use. Often highly decorative, privy bags came into being in rural Lancaster Co., Pa., in the early decades of the 1800's and continued to be used during the era of the outhouse. (32pp. color illus. Cocalico Valley Hist. Soc., 2009.)
