Trials of the Hochstetler Family

John M. Byler

  • 899

The Hochstetler family begins at Winterkraut in the Bernese Oberland of Switzerland, before they were forced to flee to France and then later to America. They settled in Berks Co., Pa., and prospered along with many other Amish families until disaster struck in 1757 when the Hochstetler homestead was attacked and several family members killed, while father Jacob (age 45) and his two sons (ages 11 and 13) were captured by the Indians. Col. Henry Bouquet's papers record his conversations with Jacob Hochstetler. (149pp. Author, 2008 reprint.)
