John D. Burkholder (1919-1980) was a graduate of Shippensburg University and member of New Guilford Brethren in Christ Church near Waynesboro, Pa. After graduation he married Mildred Wenger (1913-1996) and moved to Schellsburg, Bedford Co., Pa., where he had taught high school for two years, before receiving a draft notice. During WWII, John served for two years through Civilian Public Service (CPS) in Shenandoah National Park, Luray, Va. John was the editor of the CPS Newsletter the Skyliner. His diaries cover much of his time in CPS and include over 400 individuals. This book displays a copy of each diary page along with a corresponding transcription and annotation, further identifying every name mentioned. Also includes a list of people from Page Co., Va., who lost land while Shenandoah National Park was formed, and a list and description of all CPS camps mentioned in the text. (435pp. illus. index.
