For a generation of young men, when their country called on them to fight in Europe or the islands of the Pacific, they answered the call. One young man from Western Pennsylvania, Gene Wentz, grew up in coal country and left his family farm to join the Army in 1943. He was deployed to Africa and Italy, where he was assigned to the 36th Division. Gene survived several battles but was severely wounded near Velletri, Italy. Hopelessly confined to a hospital bed for several months, his faith and fortitude pulled him through. (136pp. color illus. Author, 2012.)
