A Brief History of Early Pottstown, Pennsylvania

A Brief History of Early Pottstown, Pennsylvania

Daniel A. Graham

  • 1000

Founded in 1761 by ironmaster John Potts and originally known as Potts Grove, Pottstown is located in Montgomery Co., Pa., at the confluence of the Manatawny Creek and the Schuylkill River. Strategically positioned on the river and the "Great Road" between Reading and Philadelphia and in the center of Pennsylvania's colonial iron industry, its early growth and success were guaranteed. Pottstown's history is told here through original journals, diaries, and newspaper articles, which depict its evolution from initially servicing travelers passing through the village to the iron and steel town it became by the 19th century.
